Personal Property Advisory
MEMORANDUM
From: Joyce French, Director of Risk Management
To: Deans, Directors and Department Heads
Date: January 10, 2007
Subject: Personal Property Advisory
- Due to recent events my office would like to remind the Mason Community about their personal property stored at Mason.
- Mason has a very limited responsibility for damaged, stolen, or lost personal property. Personal property include automobiles, books, laptops, wallets, furniture, artwork, instruments and memorabilia and like objects brought to campus by faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Unless Mason's negligence was clearly responsible for the loss or damage, our insurance carrier will not pay for repairs or replacement. In many cases, the individual's homeowners or renters insurance provides coverage for property located outside the residents.
- The State's property insurance will cover loss or damage of personal property only if the person's (faculty/staff) position description requires the use of specific personal items as a condition of employment. In this case, the insurance claim will be processed in the same manner as that for University-owned property.
- Please report all incidents to Mason Police per University Policy 1404.
- Direct all questions concerning reimbursement for loss to the Office of Risk Management. For more information on Mason insurance coverage visit http://www.gmu.edu/risk/ or contact the Office of Risk Management at 703 993-2599 or e-mail: risk@gmu.edu.
